A special model has been developed to study the effect of the helium upon the gas flow in the airways during the spontaneous breathing. Lower density of helium compared with air decreases the Reynolds number and it allows improving the flow during the spontaneous breathing. In the cases, where the flow becomes turbulent while the patient inspires air the flow is still laminar when the patient inspires heliox. The use of heliox decreases the work of breathing and improves ventilation. It allows in some cases to prevent the intubation of the patients.

Heliox Allows for Lower Minute Volume Ventilation in an Animal Model of Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury

BACKGROUND Helium is a noble gas with a low density, allowing for lower driving pressures and increased carbon dioxide (CO2) diffusion. Since application of protective ventilation can be limited by the development of hypoxemia or acidosis, we hypothesized that therefore heliox facilitates ventilation in an animal model of ventilator-induced lung injury. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats (N=8 per gr...

Use of heliox mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome in adults

Background: In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) mechanical ventilation is often necessary to manage hypoxia, but mechanical ventilation also induces or aggravates lung injury caused by the respiratory distress. By means of lower volume ventilation and permissive hypercapnia, lung injury is partially prevented; however, other interventions are needed. Helium, in a gas mixture with oxyg...

Calculated ventilation and effort distribution as a measure of respiratory disease and Heliox effectiveness.

In spite of numerous clinical studies, there is no consensus on the benefit Heliox mixtures can bring to asthmatic patients in terms of work of breathing and ventilation distribution. In this article we use a 3D finite element mathematical model of the lung to study the impact of asthma on effort and ventilation distribution along with the effect of Heliox compared to air. Lung surface displace...

Heliox Improves Carbon Dioxide Removal during Lung Protective Mechanical Ventilation

Introduction. Helium is a noble gas with low density and increased carbon dioxide (CO2) diffusion capacity. This allows lower driving pressures in mechanical ventilation and increased CO2 diffusion. We hypothesized that heliox facilitates ventilation in patients during lung-protective mechanical ventilation using low tidal volumes. Methods. This is an observational cohort substudy of a single a...

Feasibility study of noninvasive ventilation with helium-oxygen gas flow for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during exercise.

BACKGROUND Individually, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and helium-oxygen gas mixtures (heliox) diminish ventilatory workload and improve exercise tolerance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). NIV in combination with heliox may have additive effects on exercise tolerance in severe COPD. METHODS We assessed the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of heliox and NIV duri...
